About this work

The illustrations in Thirty-Six Views of the Summer Palace in Chengde are depictions of what Emperor Kangxi described in verse and prose form. In his engravings, Ripa followed the composition of his Chinese examples (in painting and woodcut). But sometimes he adds a detail, such as the swimming fish here. The image, thus, perfectly complements the title of the imperial poem for this scene.
