About this work

Four numbered depictions. Top left: The fourth angel blows a trumpet and causes darkness on earth. Another angel cries: 'Woe! Woe!'. Below the depiction, a reference to the Bible text in Rev. 8:12. Top right: The fifth angel blows a trumpet and a falling star opens the bottomless pit, from which smoke and locusts emerge that torment people without the seal of God on their foreheads. Below the depiction, a reference to the Bible text in Rev. 9:1. Bottom left: The sixth angel blows a trumpet. Next to the angel sits God the Father on his throne and stands the golden altar with the four horns from which a voice comes ordering that the four angels who are imprisoned must be released. The angels and the riders on horses with lion heads wipe out a third of humanity. Below the depiction, a reference to the Bible text in Rev. 9:13. Bottom right: The angel with a face like the sun and legs like pillars of fire, with one foot on the sea and one on the land, gives the book to John.
