About this work
Personifications of the four continents – America with feather headdress and skirt, Africa with elephant hat and tusk, Asia with turban and incense burner, and Europe with armor and scepter – offer gifts to the city maiden of Rotterdam. Behind her a statue of Erasmus. In the foreground a nymph on a wagon, drawn by swans on the river. In the background a city view with the St. Laurens Church.
