About this work

On the left, King Darius I of Persia stands with a scepter and sword in his hands. In the background, Darius is shown being chosen as King of Persia; his horse neighs first at sunrise. On the right, King Xerxes of Persia stands with a hand on a pickaxe. In the background, the men of Xerxes are shown whipping the Hellespont. They did this on Xerxes' orders after the bridges built over the Hellespont were destroyed by storm and water. Below the image, two three-line texts in Latin. This print is part of an album.
