About this work
On the left stands King Darius I of Persia with a scepter and sword in his hands. In the background it can be seen how Darius was chosen king of Persia. His horse neighs first at sunrise. On the right King Xerxes of Persia standing with a hand on a pickaxe. In the background it can be seen how the men of Xerxes whip the Hellespont. They did this on the orders of Xerxes after the bridges built over the Hellespont were destroyed by storm and water. Below the scene two three-line texts in Latin. This print is part of an album.
