About this work

Mary breastfeeds Christ while sitting on the donkey during the Flight into Egypt. Joseph leads the donkey. In the background, the Massacre of the Innocents in Bethlehem and the legend of the rapidly growing corn. Several soldiers on horseback ask a farmer if he has seen a family pass by. The farmer tells them he saw the family when he was sowing the corn. The soldiers conclude that it must have been a long time ago and abandon the search. To the right against the tree, a pointing figure with a sun on his head, possibly an idol soon to fall from its pedestal. Below the scene, a Latin reference to the Biblical text in Matthew 2:14. This print is part of an album.
