About this work

The personification of Faith (Fides) sits with a cross and an open Bible on her lap, her foot resting on a snake. Above her head a flame burns, symbol of divine inspiration. Faith points to a triangular stone standing next to her on the ground on which the All-Seeing Eye shines. Above in the scene are two portrait medallions of Charles II and James II. To the left and right of these stand eight medallions depicting figures tortured in various ways.
