About this work
The nymph Salmacis stands by a pillar in a landscape with a garden. She looks up at the clouds where Mercury, Venus and Amor appear. In the background Salmacis embraces Hermaphroditus while they are in the water, after which they would merge into a hermaphroditic being according to the myth. Under the depiction the text from the Metamorphoses of Ovidius, book 4, verses 385-386, in Latin. This print is part of an album.
