About this work

King Ahasuerus gives his signet ring to Haman, enabling Haman to carry out the king's plan to have all Jews put to death. In the background, the decree is proclaimed. A group of Jews sits mourning with ashes on their heads. On the right, Queen Esther is in her chamber, instructing a servant to bring clothes to Mordecai so he can wear them instead of his mourning garments. To the left of the building, Mordecai refuses to accept the clothes. Further in the background, Esther prays for a favorable outcome. Below the image, a Latin reference to the biblical text in Esther 3.
