About this work

Two scenes from the life of the artist as a married man. On the left he is at work in his workshop and painting a portrait of a lady, an assignment clearly below his level. This is emphasised by the emblem below the image, of a swan being clipped. On the right scene the artist sits ill in a chair, probably at the end of his life, with his wife and three children around him.
