About this work
Venus sits with a globe on her lap. Behind her stands Mars, dressed in armor, placing his left hand on her breast. To the left, Amor with his quiver on his shoulder, Ceres, and Bacchus approach Venus. Bacchus holds a full basket above his head. This is an embodiment of the theme 'Sine Cerere et Baccho friget Venus'. Without food and wine, Venus is cold. Presumably, the Marquis del Vasto, Alfonso d'Avalos, and his wife are portrayed here as Mars and Venus.
