About this work
Allegory of temperance and lust. On a palace terrace sits the personification of Temperance (Temperantia). She pours water from a jug into a goblet. On a stone table beside her stand various jugs and her name is inscribed. To the right, King Sardanapalus with distaffs. In the background, the burning of Sardanapalus's palace. The print has a Latin, French, and Dutch inscription and is part of a series on the seven virtues.
