About this work
Warrior Asahina Saburo, with makeup characteristic of this kabuki role, holds a club in his right hand and a mask of the goddess of luck, Okame, in his left. His trousers feature a pattern of cherry blossoms floating in a light blue river. Spring blossoms in the background. The mask and club refer to a type of tag game among ladies-in-waiting at the old court. It was believed that the person who was tagged would get married the following year.
