About this work

Factice album with 115 prints and one title page on 72 album leaves. Factice album, meaning: an album compiled by a collector or owner of the prints. This collected work is bound in four volumes, with this book as the third part. The album is compiled with the publication of an artist's encyclopedia written by Matthew Pilkington in 1767, edited and revised by Johann Heinrich Füssli in 1805, as a guide for the collected prints. The cut-out text sheets from this book are, with the album leaves as passe-partouts, incorporated into the album. The edges of pages 353 to 542 of the third part are pasted into this album in this manner. Text in English appears on both sides, which remains visible through this method. The prints are either pasted loose onto the album leaves or printed and inserted on folios. The prints are mainly made by the artists described in the inserted text on the adjacent album leaf. The prints are an addition to the text.
