The Incroyables, 1796

Two 'Incroyables', so named because, together with their female counterparts 'the Merveilleuses', they dressed extravagantly as a rebellious group during the French Directory (1795-1799). Left: 'incroyable' dressed in a frock coat, striped waistcoat, and breeches. Cravat. Striped stockings. Accessories: earring in the right ear, diamond-shaped broche(?), walking stick, tall hat, boots with pointed toes. Right: 'incroyable' dressed in a frock coat with large lapels and a double row of buttons. Striped waistcoat and knee breeches. Striped cravat. Stockings. Accessories: stick with cockade, lorgnette in hand, earring in the left ear, broche(?) in the shape of a half-moon, walking stick, flat shoes with pointed toes.
