About this work

A woodblock carver works on a block while a fashionably dressed young woman in the foreground prints a print. Before her a stack of paper; beside her a bowl with red and green ink and a brush; on the other side a stack of prints printed in red and green. This surimono is also seen as a depiction of Hokusai at work with his daughter Ôei. The print was probably made on commission for the poet Nanzan, due to the reference to his name on the room screen.
