About this work

Mary with the body of the dead Christ on her lap under the cross surrounded by followers. Mary Magdalene kisses the feet of Christ. The pyramidal composition is accentuated by the two ladders leaning against the cross, with a spear and a stick with a sponge behind them. In the foreground on a pedestal lie the crown of thorns, nails, and a hammer. On the pedestal the text: Propter iniquitates nostras. Esaias. 53.
