About this work
Hugo de Groot is carried, hidden in a book chest, in 1621 from Loevenstein Castle to the boat that will take him to solid ground. The chest is followed by his wife Maria van Reigersberch and their maid Elsje van Houweningen. Van Reigersberch had devised the plan for the escape with the book chest, and Van Houweningen played a major role in its execution.
