About this work
Samurai Hasebe Nobutsura fastens his undergarment while looking back at the attacking troops, of whom only the lanterns are depicted. In his mouth he holds the favorite flute of his master, Prince Mochihito, wrapped in a purple cloth. The white stylized butterfly on the red lanterns is the family crest of the Taira clan. Scene from a kabuki play. Poem by Mibu no Tadami.
