About this work
The spirit of the cherry tree, Sumizome, depicted as a courtesan holding a branch of blossoms. She is about to strike the courtier Kuronushi on the head with the branch because he wanted to chop down the cherry tree. This theatrical scene depicts the rivalry between two famous poets; Otomo no Kuronushi (with an axe) and the female poet Ono no Komachi. Scene from a kabuki play. Poem by Saki no Dai-Sojô Jien.
