About this work
The personification of the Spanish Inquisition with snake hair has taken the place of Justice, who sleeps bound. On the left, Liberty is driven away and Truth is stabbed. On the right, Spanish soldiers plunder the chest of privileges. In the background, executions. At the top in a medallion the portraits of Philip II and Charles V. At the bottom a two-line motto in Dutch. Lower part of the print engraved.
