About this work

The monk Seigen was in love with Princess Sakura (cherry blossom). She rejected him, whereupon he starved himself, and his spirit haunted her. The blue makeup and the pose of the hands indicate that this is a ghost. The poem is in keeping with Seigen's restlessness: without cherry blossom, perhaps our heart would find peace in the spring.
