About this work

Kabuki actor Nakamura Fukusuke I in the role of boatman Matsuemon, holding onto a branch of a pine tree, with a sea battle in the background. Matsuemon was asked to teach the 'secret art of rowing backwards' to enemy troops. His plan is discovered, after which he flees into a pine tree and from there sees that he is surrounded and cannot escape.
