About this work

Glass pane with a scene from the history of Miltiades, crowned with a bust of Rombout Hogerbeets, 1627. Miltiades is imprisoned after years of faithful service. On either side Pallas and Mercury, further decorated with vines, weapons and putti. Below the central scene a verse of six lines. Part of a series of three allegorical glass panes in memory of the imprisonment, flight and exile of Hugo de Groot, 1619-1622. Made in 1627 for the house of Abraham Daatselaar, the merchant in Gorcum who helped Hugo de Groot escape.
