About this work

Portrait of the printmaker, painter, and poet Jan Luyken. Above the oval portrait, a putto holds a laurel wreath. Other putti carry a cross, a censer, or burning hearts. On the ground lies a globe of the Netherlands, around which reading children stand, distracted by a figure with a winged hat, possibly Mercury. This figure directs sunlight through a magnifying glass onto the scene below. On the ground lie drawing and painting supplies, books, and a Bible. A woman holding a scroll points to the portrait. On the pedestal, in a cartouche, are Luyken's birth and death dates and a six-line Dutch eulogy.
