About this work
Portrait of the printmaker, painter and poet Jan Luyken. Above the oval with the portrait a putto holds a laurel wreath. Other putti carry a cross, censer or burning hearts. On the ground lies a globe on which reading children stand, who are distracted by a figure with a winged headgear, possibly Mercury. He lets sunlight fall on the scene below him through a magnifying glass. On the ground lie drawing and painting supplies, books and a Bible. A woman with a book scroll in her hand points to the portrait. In a cartouche the birth and death date of Luyken and a laudatory poem in Dutch.
