About this work

Portrait of the printmaker, painter and poet Jan Luyken. Above the oval with the portrait a putto holds a laurel wreath. Other putti carry a cross, incense burner or burning hearts. On the ground lies a royal apple with children reading, who are distracted by a figure with a winged hat, possibly Mercury. This lets sunlight fall through a magnifying glass on the scene below him. On the ground lie drawing and painting supplies, books and a Bible. A woman with a scroll in her hand points to the portrait. On the pedestal in a cartouche the birth and death date of Luyken and a six-line eulogy in Dutch.
