About this work

Portrait of the engraver, painter and poet Jan Luyken. Above the oval portrait, a putto holds a laurel wreath. Other putti carry a cross, a censer or burning hearts. On the ground lies a globe of the world, with children reading nearby who are distracted by a figure with a winged hat, possibly Mercury. This figure lets sunlight fall on the scene below him through a magnifying glass. On the ground lie drawing and painting supplies, books and a Bible. A woman holding a scroll points to the portrait. On the pedestal, in a cartouche, the birth and death dates of Luyken and a six-line poem of praise in Dutch.
