About this work

Memorial stone for Jan van Speyk, in the courtyard of the Burgerweeshuis in Amsterdam, 20 October 1831. Plaque with inscription: 'To Jan Carel Josephus van Speyk, [...] on the state cannon boat no. 2 off Antwerp, attacked by the rebellious Belgians, he set fire to the gunpowder to save the honor of the Dutch flag and died the hero's death, on the 5th of February 1831'.
