Dr. Slop and Susannah exchange insults. Susannah stands behind the cradle in which the baby Tristram lies, with a plaster over his nose. She has a burning candle in her right hand, with her left she pinches her nose shut and looks with an angry face at the doctor. Dr. Slop stands frowning, his legs wide apart, a medicine (cataplasm) in a spoon in his hand; he threatens Susannah with his fist. His wig is on fire, his hat lies on the ground. A chair is overturned and lies by the cradle. Obadiah hurries into the room from the right, a washbasin in his left hand and a bottle under his left arm, a chamber pot in his right hand.
