About this work
Uncle Toby (right) marches from right to left, a crutch under his left arm, and points with his right crutch towards the fortifications (left), where the 'Gate of St Nicolas' is flanked on each side by a boot. In his left hand he holds the 'London Gazette'. Trim, holding a hoe aloft, marches in front of his master. An illustration for Laurence Sterne’s The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (York 1759- 1767).
