About this work

The Dutch Maiden asks Minister of Justice Jan Loeff to be milder in the criminal law. Both stand in front of the gate of the women's prison Het Spinhuis in Amsterdam. Above the gate the two lines of poetry by P.C. Hooft (not Vondel) about mildness in punishments. In view of the death of a seriously ill woman in the prison of Middelburg on September 2-3, despite repeated requests to the minister for exemption.
