About this work
A woman and two men pulling a large cart stacked with sake barrels. The sake is a gift from the new Meiji Emperor during his first visit to Tokyo in 1868. The three figures are Kabuki actors (l-r): Nakamura Shikan IV as the tattooed firefighter Tobi Komakichi, center: Sawamura Tanosuke III as the geisha Okiku, and right: Onoe Kikugorô V in a green overcoat as Chōdai no Mikinosuke.
