About this work

Ceres, the goddess of the harvest, is depicted seated in a lush landscape. She is surrounded by four small naked boys personifying the four elements. One boy sits next to a pot of fire, a second has a large cloud as a hat, a third pours water from a jug, and the fourth digs in the earth with a spade. In the foreground stands a bowl of fruit. Flowers bloom on the left and a pumpkin grows on a vine. Four lines of verse in Latin in the lower margin.
