About this work

Portrait to the right of Pieter Rabus in an ornamental oval medallion. The portrait rests on a pedestal with a relief depicting several classicist figures near a tombstone and a pond with swans. To the left of the portrait, a putto with flowers and a cord in his left hand, which he uses to draw back part of a curtain above the portrait. A snake bites at the flowers he is dropping. In the background to the left, three dancing nude female figures are spied upon by two satyrs in a forest; to the right, a view into the city of Rotterdam. Below the scene, two lines in Latin.
