About this work

Hugo Grotius, hidden in the book chest and accompanied by his maid Elsje van Houweningen, is rowed in a small boat from Slot Loevestein to Gorinchem, 22 March 1621. His wife Maria van Reigersberch, who devised the escape plan using the book chest, watches from the tower. Van Houweningen holds a handkerchief in her hand as a sign to Van Reigersberch that everything is proceeding well. With a four-line Dutch inscription. Signed in the lower right with a C.
