About this work
Relief with Arion on the dolphin above the door to the Assurance Room in the northern gallery of the Town Hall on the Dam in Amsterdam. Seated on a dolphin, he plays his cittern or lyre. To the right in the background, a ship with the Amsterdam flag and the city coat of arms. Various versions of the myth of Arion exist. However, in every telling, he is saved by a dolphin sent by Apollo thanks to his singing and playing. By his performance, Arion effectively insured his own rescue - in the Assurance Room, goods could be insured. Signed at the bottom center: G.
