Two Scenes on a Medal Box: Grant of the New Arms of Amsterdam, 1342; Addition of the Imperial Crown, 1489

Two scenes on a medal box from 1655 commemorating the donation of the new coat of arms of Amsterdam in 1342 and the addition of the imperial crown in 1489 (NG-VG-1-41-A). The medal box consisted of two round silver plaquettes that could be screwed together. Above: Count Willem sitting on a throne, surrounded by courtiers and soldiers, gives the new coat of arms to a group of citizens. Below, an inscription in Latin. Below: Emperor Maximilian standing among a group of courtiers and soldiers places the imperial crown above the coat of arms that someone from the group of citizens holds up to him.
