About this work
A representation illustrating the theme: Sine Baccho et Cerere friget Venus (without wine and other pleasures, love is not possible). Venus, as a naked woman, sits under a tree on the lap of a young man who embraces her. She is surrounded by Bacchus, who pours her wine, and Ceres, who provides her with fruit. Cupid aims his arrow at her. Emblem no. 29 in Emblemata Saecularia, 1596, and no. 8 in the second edition of 1611.
