About this work

Feigned, money-grubbing love: in a modest room, a peasant is wooed by a woman, while a second woman secretly takes money from his purse behind him. In the accompanying text, the women speak to the viewer: 'We feign love to the peasant as soon as he pays / completely in love with the money he has in his purse'. Under the table stands a fire-tester. To the left on the ground is a beer jug. Emblem no. 32 from Emblemata Saecularia, 1596, and no. 11 in the second edition of 1611.
