About this work
An elegantly dressed lady sits before an open fireplace, between a young man to whom she gives her heart and an old man to whom she holds out a pair of spectacles. The young man accepts the heart. The old man (the old cold fool) is 'spectacled', that is: deceived, and may warm his cold hands at the fireplace. The print by Gilles van Breen after Pieter de Jode, which served as a model for De Bry, was published by him himself, together with his brother Johan Israel.
