About this work

The Man is confronted with Death at the end of his life. He aims his deadly arrow at him. The man seeks protection behind the image of Hope, but the bag of money gives way and falls over. A broken hourglass indicates that the last hour of the man has struck. Wealth cannot help the man after death. In a cartouche at the bottom of the print a Dutch inscription in rhyme. The print is part of a four-part series on the futility of hope in money and other worldly things.
