About this work
Alva rules on a throne with the devil crowning him; next to him stands Cardinal Granvelle, who blows bad inspiration into the governor-general with a bellows. Alva has the seven provinces in his grip, depicted as women in chains kneeling before the ruler, while rulers of the states look on. In the background, scenes of executions under Alva's rule. In the lower margin, a Dutch verse and an explanatory list.
