About this work
Mary and Joseph, seated in/among ruins, show their newborn child to two shepherds. In the background the announcement to the shepherds by an angel. Below the image four Latin verses. This print is part of a series of six prints with scenes from the early life of Mary. They are called the 'Masterpieces' because Goltzius imitated the work of various illustrious predecessors in them.
