About this work
Mary and Joseph, seated in or by a ruin, show their newborn child to two shepherds. In the background the Annunciation to the shepherds by an angel. Below the representation four Latin verse lines. This print is part of a series of six prints with scenes from the early life of Mary. They are called the 'Masterpieces' because Goltzius imitated the work of various illustrious predecessors in them.
