About this work
The inscription on a later state of this portrait states that Jan van Zuren is depicted at the age of 71. Through the Latin legend, we know that Goltzius engraved the portrait of the Haarlem burgomaster after a painting by Maarten van Heemskerck. <BR />The painting has been lost. It was in the collection of Paulus van Beresteyn in 1628. The print is dated 1588, but was executed only in 1590. Van Zuren would die a year later.
