About this work
Full-length portrait of the Polish nobleman Balthasar Bathory de Somlyo at the age of 22, right hand on hip, left hand on the hilt of the sword at his side. In 1583, while visiting the Netherlands with a Polish delegation, he went to Haarlem to have Goltzius paint his portrait. In the upper right of the composition is a small coat of arms with a motto. In the background, a battle scene. Space left blank below the composition for an inscription. See also the portrait of Stanislas Sobocki, a member of the delegation.
