About this work

An old man sits by a poor cottage, a broken jug on a string around his neck, a walking stick in his hand, his arm resting on a basket, a simple meal on the ground at his feet. Below the image four lines of Dutch text, warning against the consequences of 'greed and excessive drinking', including 'dripping eyes, bad liver, unhealthy limbs'. Pendant of a print of a young drinker.
