About this work
Depiction of the musical contest between Apollo and Pan: in a clearing in a forest, Apollo plays a stringed instrument in the presence of the Muses before the mountain god Tmolus, who acts as judge. Far to the right stands Pan with his wind instrument. King Midas points to him; he tried to convince Tmolus that Pan played more beautifully than Apollo, whereupon Apollo gave him donkey ears. Below the scene seven times two lines of Latin verses.
