About this work
The Spanish heathen Preciosa stands before a richly dressed man. A woman exposes a breast of Preciosa. Behind this trio an older woman steals jewelry from a box standing on the table in front of her. The Spanish heathen Preciosa and the woman are figures taken from the story 'La Gitanella' by Miguel de Cervantes from 1613, known in the Netherlands as 'Het Spaans Heidinnetje'. Heathen and heatheness were contemporary terms for the Roma people.
